Derby della Madonnina: Milan vs Inter
Two clubs, one stadium, and two ends competing with giant choreographies: the Milan derby is one of the great spectacles of European football. Here's how to experience it in person.

What is the Derby della Madonnina?
The name comes from the Madonnina, the golden statue of the Virgin on top of Milan's cathedral. The derby pits AC Milan (the rossoneri) against Inter (the nerazzurri), born of the same family: Inter was founded in 1908 by breakaway Milan members.
A rare twist: both clubs share San Siro. The "home" club changes from match to match, but each set of ultras keeps its own end, the Curva Sud for Milan and the Curva Nord for Inter.
When is the derby played?
There are at least two derbies a season in Serie A, one in each half. Sometimes there are more in the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa or in Europe.
Exact dates and kick-off times are set by Serie A only a few weeks before the match, depending on TV. Book cancellable accommodation as soon as the fixtures come out, then adjust.
Getting a derby ticket
- Tickets are sold by the home club: on booking.acmilan.com when Milan are at home, on inter.it when Inter are.
- Sales start with season ticket holders and club members, then a short general sale if seats remain. For a derby, seats often go during the member phase: a membership with the home club greatly improves your chances.
- Tickets are named: bring ID.
Beware of resellers: derby prices on unofficial sites are often absurd, and a ticket in someone else's name can cause problems at the gate.
Where to sit
- To see the tifos: a side stand (red or orange) in the second or third tier gives you a view of both ends at once.
- For the atmosphere: your side's curva, but seats there are scarce and mostly season tickets.
- Neutral: avoid club colours if you're seated near the rival end.
On derby day
- Arrive at least 90 minutes early: the choreography is unveiled before kick-off, and it's the moment not to miss.
- Security is tighter: expect queues at the gates.
